Icing can be formed into shapes such as flowers and leaves using a pastry bag. A pastry bag is an often cone- or triangular-shaped, hand-held bag made from cloth, paper, or plastic that is used to pipe semi-solid foods by pressing them through a narrow opening at one end. Aside from icings and frostings, pastry bags are commonly used to shape meringue and whipped cream, and to fill doughnuts with jelly or vanilla custard. Using icing to decorate cakes is commonly used with wedding cakes, anniversary cakes and birthday cakes.
Cherry Grape-Fruit Cocktails
Cut the grape-fruit into halves, crosswise, and scoop out the pulp, rejecting the white inner skin as well as the seeds. Clean the shells; cut the edges with a sharp knife into scallops and throw them into cold water. Set the pulp on the ice. At serving time put a teaspoon of cracked ice in the bottom of each shell; fill with the pulp, mixed thoroughly with powdered sugar and a little sherry, if desired; and place a maraschino cherry or bit of bright-colored jelly in the centre of each. Lay on paper doilies or surround with bits of asparagus fern.

Being a fan of licorice myself, I was asked by a friend to try the best licorice that she had ever had. The flavor was cherry licorice and she said that it tasted like the sweetest cherry pie that she had ever had. Not being a fan of cherry pie or anything cherry for that matter, I was reluctant to try it. But to my delight, it was as good, if not better than what my friend had described.
To me, the best licorice needs to be chewy and so full of flavor that you can't help but eat piece after piece. What attracted me to the cherry was the deep flavor that it had along with the poppy red color. It wasn't only candy for the mouth, it was candy for the eyes as well. The chewiness was addicting and when my friend and I had eaten the whole bag, we were left wanting more.
Another aspect of this cherry licorice that I loved was its smell. The cherry aroma hits your nose well before the candy hits your taste buds. Right when the bag was opened, a deep, sweet, summery smell wafted into my nose and made me rethink my opposition against all things cherry . I started thinking about the cherry tree we had in our backyard when I was a kid. The cool breeze would make the leaves dance and the cherries would sway right along. I would lie beneath that tree in its refreshing shade and daydream about all the things a little girl daydreams about.
It's amazing where flavors and scents can lead you. But this licorice was so good that every time I have one, I am taken right back to that same spot under the cherry tree on that warm summer day. Now that is what I call a good piece of candy.
